Mr. Aaron Rex, Director of Bands
Aaron Rex is currently in his second year as Director of Bands for the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools. Originally from Perrysburg, Ohio, he received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Kent State University and is currently pursuing a Master of Music Education from Bowling Green State University. He is responsible for coordinating all band activities and conducts the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Gold Band, Marching Bees, Jazz Band, assists with the middle school bands, and teaches AP Music Theory. In addition to his duties at Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Aaron has served as a district officer and on various committees for the Ohio Music Education Association.
Prior to coming to Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Aaron served as Director of Bands for the Jackson City Schools in Jackson, Ohio. During his tenure at Jackson, the band program experienced over a 50% increase in enrollment, including the revival of the jazz program which doubled in size under his leadership. The Jackson Wind Ensemble earned “Superior” ratings at OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Events all years under his direction and performed at the 2017 OMEA Professional Development Conference in Cleveland. Most recently, Aaron was named a Semifinalist for both the 2017 Music & Arts Music Educator of the Year and the 2018 Grammy Music Educator Award. Aaron has also presented a clinics at the 2016, 2017, and 2018 OMEA Professional Development Conferences, as well as the Complete Band Director Workshop at Capital University.
While at Kent State University, Aaron served as Field Commander for the Marching Golden Flashes and performed with the Kent State Wind Ensemble at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He studied advanced conducting with Drs. Wayne Gorder and Scott Seaton, and trombone/euphonium with David Mitchell and Chas Baker. As an undergraduate, Aaron was selected to conduct the Kent State University Orchestra and the Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma North Central District Reading Band. Aaron was also an active member in the choral programs at Kent State, singing bass in both the Chorale and Men’s Chorus. He holds memberships in the American School Band Directors Association, Ohio Music Education Association, and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity.
Ms. Tricia Astey, Associate Director
Tricia Astey is Associate Director of Bands of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District (OH), where she directs Concert Winds, Symphonic Crimson Band, and Music Pit Orchestra at the high school level. She is also the director of the Beginning Band Program, the Associate Director of the Marching Band and assists with the 6th-7th grade bands. Previously, Mrs, Astey was the director of elementary bands in the Bedford City Schools (OH). Tricia received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baldwin-Wallace College (OH) in 2003 and complete a degree in Educational Administration from the University of Scranton (PA) in 2008. She holds a Technology Certificate from Fresno Pacific University (CA).
Tricia has been influential as a Mentor to colleagues in her district and has resided as Department Chair of the Music Department. Ms. Astey has been nominated as Teacher of the Year by her peers, has been recognized as a Master Teacher and acknowledged as an Accomplished Teacher. In 2017, Tricia presented at the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference (“Play it Like Chocolate”), in which she is a proud member. She resides in Brecksville with her three children Jacob, Luke, and Lyla.
Mr. John Pasternak, Assistant Director
John Pasternak attended Kent State University (KSU) where he received his Bachelor of Music Education degree. Mr. Pasternak has directed bands and choirs grades five through twelve since 2013. In August of 2018, he joined the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Music Department as a fifth grade general music teacher at Central School and since then, his roles have included assisting with the Marching Bees, Intermediate Band, Symphonic Band, Middle School Bands and Fifth Grade Band program. In addition to teaching, he has also served as the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Middle School Stage Crew advisor. In 2019, the Stage Crew students produced the “Bee One Community” video in which Mr. Pasternak composed the music for and the Brecksville Broadview Heights High School Chamber Orchestra recorded the soundtrack.
