It’s here! The 2019-2020 school year officially starts on Wednesday! We are looking forward to continuing a great start to the 2019 Marching Bees. Please make sure you read carefully the items below regarding In-School Rehearsals/Lunches. We’ll see everyone at our final Post-Camp rehearsal Monday(8/19) from 6:00pm-9:00pm!

DEADLINE: This FRIDAY is the Show 1/Pregame Music Check-Off deadline for all Squad Leaders. Let’s keep working towards our goal of 100% memorization by our first game on August 30th!

IN-SCHOOL REHEARSALS/LUNCHES

  • All MARCHING BAND students will report to band 6th period.
  • SYMPHONIC BANDS – Ignore what your schedule says, and follow the schedule below:
    • Students scheduled for Symphonic Band 5th period (Section 1), will eat lunch 5th period and report to band 6th period.
    • Students scheduled for Symphonic Band 7th period (Section 2), will eat lunch 7th period and report to band 6th period.
  • Non-Marchers should report during their regularly scheduled band period.
  • Plan to go outside every day — which means having appropriate footwear!
    • If you do not wear athletic shoes to school, then you must bring a pair to change into for the band period (some students just keep an old pair in their band locker).
  • TARDINESS: Students will be given time at the beginning of rehearsal to get instruments out and report to their designated rehearsal areas. Since we have very little time during the school day it is IMPERATIVE that students follow the given times to be ready for rehearsal.
    • For outdoor rehearsals students will have a total of 12 minutes from the 5th period dismissal bell to be in Attendance Block at the stadium.
    • For indoor rehearsals, student will have 7 minutes from the 5th period dismissal bell to be in their assigned auditorium seats.

MEET THE BAND – 8/26

It was brought to our attention that an incorrect date for Meet the Band was listed on the BBHHS website page. Please be advised that the correct date is MONDAY, AUGUST 26th at 8:30pm, which is the date on the band website and included in the Summer Mailing. Students still report in SUMMER UNIFORM at 6:00pm for rehearsal, with the performance to follow at 8:30pm. We hope to see you all there!

DRUMLINE/FLAGLINE REHEARSALS

The Google calendar on the band website page has all the updated rehearsals for Drumline and Flagline. These additional rehearsals are required for all Drumline and Flagline members. Flagline will have their extra rehearsal every Thursday from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Drumline will have their extra rehearsal on either Tuesday or Wednesday from 6:00pm-9:00pm depending on which day Marching Band rehearsal is scheduled. If Marching Band rehearsal is on Tuesday, Drumline will be on Wednesday. If Marching Band rehearsal is on Wednesday, Drumline will be on Tuesday. Essentially, Drumline has rehearsal on Tuesdays AND Wednesdays during marching season, one being a sectional and one being full band.

STUDENT LEADER PEP BANDS

We have TWO performances this week for Student Leaders ONLY. On Tuesday(8/20), ALL Student Leaders need to report to the Band Room by 10:00am wearing SUMMER UNIFORM. We will be performing a couple tunes at the opening Teacher Convocation.

On Wednesday(8/21), Student Leaders need to report to the Band Room at 7:00am for warm-up to play for the opening day Spirit Rally. We will move out to the BBHHS main entrance by 7:15am. Students may wear whatever they like for the first day of school.

Thank you to everyone that made our 2019 Band Camp a success! Our Marching Bees demonstrated a much improved work ethic and musicality both weeks, and our rookies took on to marching band with ease. We are very proud of everything students accomplished both weeks at camp!

POST-CAMP SCHEDULE:

These rehearsals are considered “Post-Camp” rehearsals, because they occur between Band Camp and the beginning of the school year. ALL REHEARSALS ARE REQUIRED.

Monday, August 12 – 6:00pm-9:00pm

Wednesday, August 14 – 6:00pm-9:00pm

Monday, August 19 – 6:00pm-9:00pm

Students should come to rehearsal prepared in the same way as Band Camp: hydrated, rested, fed, and wearing sunscreen and appropriate dress.

CEDAR POINT – SATURDAY, 8/17

The Marching Bees will be traveling to Cedar Point on Saturday, August 17th. The band will step off at 11:00am and parade through the park with a stop to perform a few tunes as well. While this is an optional performance, students are still expected to uphold all BBHHS Student and Band Handbook policies. Students need to be at BBHHS in SUMMER UNIFORM ready to load buses at 8:15am. Please make sure you have located your Summer Uniform polo/shorts to make sure they still fit. Mrs. Reagan will be at BBHHS on Monday for any shorts exchanges.

REFUNDS WILL ONLY BE OFFERED IN EXTREME SITUATIONS. PAID TICKETS ARE CONSIDERED A COMMITMENT TO ATTEND, RAIN OR SHINE.

MUSIC CHECK-OFFS

Music Check-Offs are an important component to being a member of the Marching Bees. It allows the directors/leaders to hear students individually and in small groups to assess progress and provide guidance/instruction so students may be successful. It also makes sure all of us are accountable for knowing our music so we may continue to have superior performances. Students are not permitted to march without a flip folder/lyre in performance unless ALL their music for that performance is completely tested off (This includes Cedar Point on 8/17). A full check-off schedule for the year is available HERE. Deadlines for the Woodstock Show and Pregame are below. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!

INSTRUMENT/EQUIPMENT CARE

In an instrumental performing ensemble there is a great amount of financial investment by parents and the school for instruments and equipment. Poor care of instruments and equipment has a negative affect on student success. A major goal for the BBHHS Band Program this year will be improved instrument/equipment care and maintenance. Regardless if the instrument is personally owned to school owned, it is important for students to learn proper care of instruments and equipment. At Band Camp, our clinicians spent time going over with students how to properly set instruments down when not in use and how to store them properly after rehearsal.

Students will be held accountable for proper instrument, locker, and equipment care throughout the school year.

Pay-to-Participate Fee: The participation fee for this year as determined by the school district in $105.00. A whole savings of $6.00 from last year! This can be paid at Uniform Fitting Nights.

PERSONAL WELLNESS

Make sure you are taking good care of yourself during both weeks of Band Camp. Here are some Band Camp survival tips:

  • HYDRATE! Drink water every night before rehearsal, drink water with breakfast every day, and bring water with you to rehearsal every day. Avoid soda and dairy-based drinks.
  •  Eat healthy meals! From breakfast through dinner, balance your meal with different nutrients, such as vitamins, protein, carbohydrates, and good fats. They’ll provide you with long-term energy, and refresh your body for the next rehearsal period. Avoid junk food and high amounts of dairy.
  • Sunscreen! Bring and apply sunscreen often. SPF of at least 30 is recommended.
  • Dress appropriately! We will be practicing on a blacktop parking lot with zero shade. Wear light colored clothing and athletic shorts. Compression shorts can also be a good idea to wear underneath shorts to avoid chaffing. Tennis shoes/sneakers with ankle height socks are a must! Hats and sunglasses are also recommended.
  • To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is to be forgotten.”
  • Did we mention water and sunscreen?

INSTRUMENTS

Students will need to bring instruments (in working order) to camp on MONDAY, JULY 29th.

  • School instruments for marching band may be picked up anytime Wednesday/Thursday/Friday this week (July 24-26) from 10am-2pm. Come to rehearsal early if on the July 29th if you can not make it to BBHHS to pick up your instrument this week.

MUSIC

  • Every student is being asked to PRINT ALL MUSIC and have it loaded in your Flip Folder by JULY 29TH.  The password was sent via Remind. You should have all of the Woodstock Show, Pregame, and Warm-Ups printed and ready to go.
  • LYRES & FLIP FOLDERS are required of all members, and may be purchased at uniform fitting nights (percussion/flags are exempt).  To ensure effective music memorization, students MUST have their lyre, flip folder, and all music, for every rehearsal. CELL PHONES ARE NOT PERMITTED AS A SUBSTITUTION.
  • Make sure to double check your PART ASSIGNMENT, to print the correct part (this will be checked). Please come prepared! If you do not have access to a printer, let us know.
  • Students should come to camp with familiarity of their parts and the music to ensure a productive Band Camp. Memorization of all music is expected, so don’t procrastinate. Music Check-Off procedures and deadlines are available HERE. Put in the work now before school starts!

ATHLETICS

As always, we will make every effort to compromise with school athletic tryouts, practices, scrimmages, etc.  The key to this is communication — Please let us know your athletic schedule, and we will talk with your coaches.  We will be meeting with all student-atheletes at some point during camp.

Due to scheduling changes at BBHMS and a quickly growing baby, Mr. Hanna will not be involved with the Marching Bees this season. Please see the words he has to share with our band family HERE. We will miss seeing Mr. Hanna as much at BBHHS, but know our bees will make these new faces feel welcome!

We hope your summer is off to a great start! This will be our only Band Bulletin until later in July before Band Camp. Please be advised that the directors are also operating on summer hours, so we may not be available to answer e-mails as promptly as during the school year. We will respond as soon as we are able.

By now you should have received your Summer Mailing with a bunch of information and fun forms to bring to Uniform Fitting Nights. If you have not received the mailing please contact Ms. Astey. Please make sure you have all band dates for the 2019-2020 school year in your calendars, and familiarize yourself with the changes to our attendance procedure and Band Handbook.

We are still on the hunt for a couple more baritones for next year to balance out our instrumentation. If you know anyone who might be interested in joining band on baritone(and going to Disney!), it’s not too late! Have them contact Mr. Rex ASAP.

DRUMLINE SECTIONALS

Mr. Scott Velardo, our new Percussion Advisor, has put together a sectional sectional for the month of July leading up to Band Camp. Students are excused for vacation travel and other summer obligations, but PLEASE contact Mr. Velardo with scheduling conflicts so he and Andy Karkosiak can plan accordingly for attendance at sectionals. PRIVATE LESSONS

We are thrilled to see an increase in Private Lesson enrollment this summer! Private Lessons really are the BEST way for students to received individualized instruction catered to their unique talents and needs. Our band program would not be where it is without the number of students and parents valuing Private Lessons. Students who take Private Lessons advance in the band program at an accelerated pace, have the opportunity to earn honors credit, and make up a majority of our student leaders. Don’t let your student miss out on such an incredible component of their music education and band experience! We have several teachers that come to BBHHS during the summer and live in the community. A full list of private teachers we recommend is available HERE. Please contact Mr. Rex with any questions or assistance in finding a teacher.

HALFTIME SHOW MUSIC POSTED

Music and part assignments for our first halftime show are posted under the Music & Documents section of the website. You will need a password to access this page. The password is included in your summer mailing, but you can also receive it from your Squad Leader, Section Leader, or any veteran band member. We are very much looking forward to preparing our first show of the season!

We had such a great group of students apply for leadership positions this year! Unfortunately, this always makes these decisions incredibly difficult. The comprehensive application process this year with the addition of music, marching, and the interview really showed us what awesome students we have in the BBHHS Band! Please keep in mind that even if you were not selected for a leadership position you can still be a leader without a title, and we are always looking for our next set of student leaders. Any students or new leaders interested in leading our Loading Crew as the Equipment Manager(s) please contact Mr. Rex.

For our drumline members, please keep in mind that students are placed on the instrument that best suits their strengths demonstrated throughout the audition process, while also considering the overall balance needed for the drumline.

Everyone should be respectful and sensitive to those who were not selected for student leadership positions. Please feel free to contact the directors with any questions. LEADERSHIP CONTRACT: All appointed and elected student leaders must turn in the Student Leadership Contract by Friday, June 7. You can drop off completed contracts or pickup a hard copy outside the band office on Tuesday, June 4 or Wednesday, June 5 from 9:00am-2:30pm. You may also turn in completed contracts to Mr. Rex’s mailbox in the BBHHS main office during summer hours.
