March is here which means many opportunities to hear our music programs and celebrate Music In Our Schools Month! We hope you plan to attend band concerts at both the high school and middle school, as well as the annual MIOSM Pancake Breakfast on March 21st that will feature all facets of the BBHCSD music program.

WINTER BAND CONCERT – MARCH 4TH

We hope you are all making plans to attend the Winter Band Concert on Wednesday, March 4th at 7pm in the BBHHS Auditorium. The concert will feature Symphonic Band, Intermediate Band, Concert Winds, and Wind Ensemble. Students are REQUIRED to stay for the entire concert as part of their grade. Jazz Ensemble will be featured at Pancake Breakfast on March 21st and the Ashland University Jazz Festival on March 20th.

BBHMS BAND CONCERT RECEPTION

We invite our high school band students and families to attend the Middle School Bands Winter Concert on Thursday March 12th at 7pm.  It will feature Jazz Band, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands.  After the concert (around 8:15) there will be a desert reception in the cafeteria where we need high school band members to be present and available to talk with all MS Band students about the HS Band Program. If you intend to apply for a leadership position for the 2020-2021 school year, this is a great recruitment event to include on your application.

DISNEY UPDATES

FINAL PAYMENT: The final payment for the trip was due this weekend. If you were not able to make it to Great Day Tours before they closed, please make sure you stop by their office ASAP on Monday to pay your student’s balance.

    • EVERY student and at least one PARENT is REQUIRED to attend.

OHIO STATE BANDS NIGHT

The Ohio State University will be hosting their annual Bands Night on Sunday, April 19, 2020 from 3:00pm-7:00pm. This event allows current high school junior and senior musicians (Class of 2020 and 2021) to explore opportunities for applying their talent to The Ohio State University Marching and Athletic Bands, concert bands, and jazz bands. You do not need to be a music major to keep playing your instrument after high school. If you are considering attending OSU in the future this will be a great experience! ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION: LAST CALL! Students that will NOT be traveling on the bus with the band TO or FROM Disney must fill out the Alternate Transportation Form by TUESDAY, February 25th.

CONGRATULATIONS to all our students that performed at the OMEA Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Event! BBHHS Band students earned 27 “Superior” ratings, 3 “Excellent” ratings, and 2 “Good” ratings. It takes a great deal of dedication and courage to perform as a soloist or in a small ensemble. Regardless of the final rating, students become better musicians by preparing music to perform at this annual event. BEE proud!

ROOMING ASSIGNMENTS: Students should have all signed up for their preferred rooming assignments this past Friday. If you were absent or are still in need of a room assignment, please contact Mr. Rex.

PRIVATE LESSONS

As students have reviewed their Band Audition feedback, some of our students may be considering enrolling in Private Lessons. Students who take Private Lessons advance in the band program at an accelerated pace, have the opportunity to earn honors credit, and make up a majority of our student leaders. We have several teachers that come to BBHHS during the school year and live in our community. Openings will come available as Seniors graduate, but openings may be available sooner. A full list of private teachers we recommend is available HERE. Please contact Mr. Rex with any questions or assistance in finding a teacher.

If you would like to purchase a CD of the Wind Ensemble and Concert Winds performance at Severance Hall please send in payment of $10.00 with your student and place it in the Band Booster lock box outside of the Band Office. KENT STATE BAND DAY

Kent State University will be hosting their spring semester High School Band Day on February 22, 2020! Attendees will experience the energy and excitement of Kent State Basketball while joining the Kent State Flasher Brass in the stands. The tentative schedule is below:

2:00 PM: Arrive and eat with the Flasher Brass. 
3:30 PM: Tip-off and playing with the Flasher Brass in the stands.

CONGRATULATIONS to our students that performed with the OMEA All-State Band and All-State Jazz Ensemble this weekend in Cincinnati! Both ensembles gave inspiring performances with world class conductors. Being selected to the OMEA All-State ensembles is the highest honor a band student can receive in Ohio. BBHHS was one of only two schools in the entire state that had representation in all four All-State ensembles(Band, Choir, Jazz, and Orchestra). We hope to have many students audition for these groups this Spring!

DISNEY TRIP UPDATES

MAILING #2: This week we will be sending out a paper mailing that will contain many important forms for the Disney Trip and individual Bee Bucks balances. The final payment is due by March 1st. All forms are due at the REQUIRED Disney Trip Meeting on Monday, March 9th. The mailing will also be posted on the Disney Trip page by the end of the week should you need additional copies.

TRIP ROSTER VERIFICATION: All students and parents please check the Disney Attendees 2020 roster to make sure your student’s name appears on the list. Students marked with a double asterisk are those who will not be traveling with the band and will only be performing with the band. Please contact Ms. Astey with any corrections by FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH. If your name is on the list and should NOT be, please also contact Ms. Astey.

ELECTRONIC FORMS: The forms below WILL NOT be included in the paper mailing, but must be filled out electronically.

  1. DIETARY NEEDS FORM – To be filled out by ALL students, chaperones, and staff traveling with the band. Due by the REQUIRED Disney Trip Meeting on Monday, March 9th.
