Band Bulletin #32: 5/12-5/18

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Band Banquet on Monday! Doors open at 5:30pm with dinner service beginning at 6:00pm. Awards and recognition will begin at 7:00pm. We apologize in advance that some of our awards have been backordered and will not be here in time. Every student will still be recognized and we will give out everything we have. Additional items should be delivered in the coming weeks. We are very proud of every student in our band family!

REMINDER: ALL STUDENTS, EXCEPT SYMPHONIC BAND SENIORS, ARE TO REPORT TO 6TH PERIOD THIS WEEK AND FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.  SYMPHONIC BAND SENIORS WILL CONTINUE TO REPORT TO 5TH PERIOD BAND AND 6TH PERIOD LUNCH.

The BBHHS Jazz Collective gave an awesome performance at the House of Blues on Friday! Their performance was the result of a prize auctioned off at the BBH Schools Foundation Sip & Support event. Many thanks to Dan Svoboda for having them perform at your event!

2019-2020 CONCERT BAND STRUCTURE

There are many changes coming to the school district for the 2019-2020 school year, and these have also impacted the concert band structure that has been in place at BBHHS. With the growing numbers over the last several years, the current model is also creating overcrowding in the lunch periods during marching season. These new challenges opened the door to revisiting how we have structured the concert bands and see if there is a different way to best address every student’s individual needs. After consulting with our student focus group and doing some research of other large band programs in Ohio, we came up with a solution that will resolve the overcrowded lunches and the staffing challenges created by 5th grade band moving to BBHMS.

All students will still rehearse together 6th period during marching season. Wind Ensemble and Concert Winds will remain anchored in 6th period as well. The Symphonic Bands will still meet 5th period, but their structure may be varied throughout the year. This could be a Brass/Woodwind/Percussion split, a single large Symphonic Band, or the familiar Crimson/Gold structure. A new concert band has been created for 7th period. This yet-to-be-named ensemble will be made up of approximately 60 students based on the Band Audition results. It will serve as an intermediate band for students who are ready both musically and behaviorally for the next level between the Symphonic Bands and Concert Winds. This band will still show up as “Symphonic Band” on student schedules, but will occur during 7th period.

Students in all bands will continue to have the opportunity to advance into the next level band during October Chair Placements. An instrument switch from larger sections such as flute, trumpet, or alto saxophone over the summer could also create opportunity for student advancement. We are excited about the opportunities this new structure can provide for the future of the BBHHS Band Program! An updated roster of the concert band structure is available HERE.
